Nov 2008 - SF Int'l Latino Film Fest / Starz Denver Film Fest

Yes, our Bay Area premiere has finally arrived! We were accepted to the San Francisco International Latino Film Festival. We will screen on Tuesday, November 18 at the City College Library. I was a bit disappointed to have the Bay Area premiere be in a library--I want to celebrate!--so I'm putting on a second screening, in conjunction with the festival, which I'll consider the official Bay Area THEATRICAL premiere of American / Sandinista. So please come to:

The Roxie Theater (16th and Valencia)
Wed, November 19 - 6pm
Only $5!!

Afterward we will have a reception at a nearby bar or restaurant. More details to come...

Also, we have a screening in the prestigious Starz Denver Film Festival on November 22 and 23rd. I may attend, but probably not. If you or someone you know will be in Denver, please let me know and I'll get you tickets.

October 2006 - Hot Springs Documentary Film Fest

Excited to screen at an all-doc fest, I decided to break the piggy bank and fly out to the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival in Arkansas. Yes, it was a lot of documentaries. If I never see another documentary again, I should be okay. The fest was great, and the nicest bunch of volunteers I've ever seen. Even in red-state Arkansas, people were supportive of American/Sandinista, and wanted to know when they could get a copy of the film. Soon! I promise....

I think my favorite film of the weekend was Crawford, about George Bush's hometown. Also good was Sittin and Pickin, and Operation Homecoming. I'm interested to see where documentary film goes now that Bush is out, Republicans are fading from power, and these wars are (hopefully) soon coming to and end. What will we make docs about?....

AUGUST 2008 - Three Fests This Month!

August is turning out to be a busy month for festivals. We're still awaiting our Bay Area premiere, but here are three this month to tell your friends about, and a great one coming up in October:

Nevada City Film Festival
(August 14-17)
A/S plays Saturday at 4pm at the Magic Theater. If you've never been to Nevada City, it's a beautiful bohemian town in the foothills of the Sierras. And just 2 hourse from oakland, so we'll be attending.

Palm Springs International Shorts Fest
(August 21 - 27)
The film plays Saturday at 11am, but hey, that's what happens when you enter the student category! I won't be there, as I have to go to a wedding on the East Coast, but if you know someone in the area, let me know so I can give them my comp tickets.

Peace on Earth Film Festival (August 29 - 31)
Our new strategy is entering every fest with the word "Peace" in the title. And it's paying off! In the face of such violence, Ben really showed a commitment to peace. We were selected (this morning) to play this festival in Chicago. I may attend, they haven't set our screening times yet.

Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival (October 17 - 26)
I'm especially excited to show the film at this world famous documentary festival in Arkansas. That's right, Arkansas! It's great to have the film recognized by this documentary community. I plan to be there, although we don't have a screening date yet. Stay tuned!

We look forward to seeing you or your friends at any of these fests! And as always, please let me know if you're coming and I'll see about sharing any complimentary tickets.

April 2008 - A/S Wins the Eisner Prize

American/Sandinista won in the film & video category of the prestigious Eisner Prize, "the highest award given for creativity on the U.C. Berkeley campus." A huge honor! The award, and a cash prize, will be presented at a campus ceremony on May 4th.

February 2008 - Portland International Film Fest

We premiered the film at the beautiful Northwest Film Center, home to the Portland International Film Festival. The film was well attended by people who remember Ben Linder's story (he grew up in Portland). Representatives from Green Empowerment, who continue to sponsor the Ben Linder Rural Worker's Association in Nicaragua, were in attendance and set up an information table. And we were honored to have the attendance of Ben's mother Elisabeth Linder, who received a huge standing ovation when I pointed her out during the Q&A. It was a beautiful moment, and a great festival.

December 2007 - IDA Awards

I attended the International Documentary Association awards gala in Los Angeles on December 5th with Charlotte Buchen, the film's cinematographer. The Pare Lorentz Award went Spike Lee for "When The Levees Broke," and the ABC News Source Award went to David Hoffman's "Sputnik Mania." As they say, it's an honor just to be nominated along such great filmmakers. You can see a list of the nominees, including American/Sandinista, here.

November 2007 - IDA Awards Nominations

Good news! We have been nominated for two awards by the International Documentary Association, which is like an Academy Awards just for documentary work. Our two categories are the Pare Lorentz Award for films with an activist spirit, and the ABC Video News Source Award, for best use of news footage in a film. The event will be held in LA on December 7, stay tuned for the results...
